Submissions are open now through February 16 for CASCADIA’s art exhibition entitled: “Women Rising: Expanding Visions/Diverse Perspectives.” The exhibit, new this year, is part of CASCADIA’s effort to expand its programming to include women in the visual arts. The exhibit, to coincide with CASCADIA’s film festival, will be displayed in the Dakota Art Store Gallery in Bellingham from April 5 until May 31.

The exhibit is being assembled in collaboration with Allied Arts of Whatcom County. Like the festival’s film selections, artwork chosen will highlight the multiplicity of women’s voices, styles, and interpretive approaches of artists living in the Pacific Northwest. Women artists are invited to submit artworks addressing a broad range of themes, issues, and ideas.

Curator/art historian Barbara Matilsky will select artworks for the exhibition. Matilsky was art curator at the Whatcom Museum for nearly ten years and organized the international traveling exhibition, “Vanishing Ice: Alpine and Polar Landscapes in Art 1775-2012 and Endangered Species: Artists on the Front Line of Biodiversity.”

She began her career as curator at the Queens Museum of Art in New York City. She then was curator of exhibitions at the Ackland Art Museum, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, for 13 years and organized more than twenty exhibitions. Most recently, she curated  the exhibition “Jyoti Duwadi, Himalaya to Cascadia: Transcending Boundaries” for Western Washington University’s Western Gallery.
