CASCADIA Celebrates Mayor’s Arts Awardee

CASCADIA International Women’s Film Festival is honored to be among the participating groups of the Whatcom Arts Project (WAP) one of this year’s Bellingham Mayor’s Arts Award recipients.  (CASCADIA was awarded the Mayor’s Arts Award in 2018.)

WAP was the initial brainchild of Valerie Dalena, CASCADIA Advisory Board member, and Dan Larner, CASCADIA Board member.  It was organized in the spring of 2020 at the beginning of the shutdown as a way that local arts organizations could give back to the community during the pandemic and maintain a presence while performances, concerts, art shows, and screenings were suspended.

WAP Organized Local Arts Groups

Ultimately, more than 30 groups from throughout Whatcom County joined in. The network created went far beyond expectations to establish a viable, concerted way that the various arts organizations and institutions could be in close contact with one another to jointly advocate for and promote the local arts scene.

Now, with the pandemic subsiding, the group is shifting its focus and redefining its mission for moving forward. One idea is to create and promote our area as a cultural destination in the state to draw people here both from Washington State and elsewhere to enjoy and take part in the many cultural activities and events that occur here.

The award will be presented 5:30 p.m. on June 29, 2022, at the Mount Baker Theatre in Bellingham. The event is free and open to the public.
